Will

On November 28, 2011, my world changed when I found out that I was going to have a baby.  Like most women, I instantly had dreams of feeling the baby move for the first time, finding out if I was having a boy or girl, feeling that first contraction and then racing to the hospital to have my little bundle of joy and finally, having my fat, bald, baby placed in my arms and feeling an overwhelming joy instantly come over me.For me, that last part never happened.  On May 31, I went to the doctor for a routine 31 week appointment.  I don’t know why, but the appointment was only 3 weeks from my last appointment instead of the usual 4 weeks between appointments.

When I went to the doctor, my blood pressure was dangerously high, and I was immediately sent to IMC to stabilize my blood pressure and to monitor the baby.  I was told that night, that we would probably have the baby. My husband and I waited and...more

Logan and Oliver

Logan was born at 24 weeks gestation, weighed 1 lb 8 oz and was 12.5 inches long. He was on a ventilator for 5 weeks. He had many struggles that he had to overcome. He spent 98 days in the NICU. When he did come home he had to come home with oxygen and was on that for 6 months. He will be 7 in September and you would never know he was a micro preemie.

Oliver was born at 35 weeks gestation and spent 2 weeks in the NICU. He is now 2 and a half and doing 2 year old things, like terrorizing his big brother.

They are both doing fantastic and are loving their new, full term (38 weeks) baby brother, Gideon.

Zooey and Misha

In 2009 I had twins. found out at 12 weeks they have a 50/50 chance of living. due to the type of twins (mono-mono)at 16 weeks I found out they have celft lip maybe palate also but can't tell yet. at 24 weeks I was admitted into the hospital I stayed there for 9 weeks. Misha & Zooey were born on Halloween. I got to choose the date. They were at 32 weeks (2 months early). They both weigh 3lbs 10 oz that rarely happens. They stayed in the NICU for 7 weeks. They came home together something that rarely happens but what wasn't rare about them. They also have cleft lip & palate both of them. On April 12 2010 they had their first surgery of many. the count is now up to 8 each. Now they are healthy and happy almost 4 year olds.

NICU Graduates' Stories

Quinn

Quinn was born 15 weeks early, and weighed 15.5 ounces (just under a pound). She spent 8 weeks on a ventilator, and was very small and very sick for what seemed like a very long time. However, she was strong-willed and stubborn, and soon she started to grow and strive. She spent 140 days in the NICU, and came home on with an NG tube, and on oxygen. She eventually had a g-tube placed in her stomach to help her eat enough volume. She is now a smart and sassy (and still strong-willed and stubborn) three year old who just started preschool and is tube-free!

Common Bonds helped my husband and me navigate our way through our daughter's nearly five month NICU stay, sometimes in ways we weren't even aware of at the time. Common Bonds and its work to support premature babies and their families touched our lives everyday we spent with our child in the NICU.
